There is no exact time frame for recovering from a traumatic brain injury, but the majority of adults will see symptoms subside after 10-14 days. In rare cases, concussion symptoms may persist for weeks, months or even years after the initial injury — and, as with any rehabilitative injury, these patients may benefit from physical therapy.
According to the Concussion Alliance, physical therapists can play a significant role in the rehabilitation process, particularly in treating neck and upper back pain, as well as dizziness and balance problems. Physical therapists can also help provide early-stage treatment of dysfunctions of the vision system, which can be caused by a concussion.
Recent research suggests that working with physical therapists can be beneficial as early as a few days after the injury, both reducing risk of persistent concussion symptoms and helping the injured individual recover quicker, with fewer complications. Mercy Urgent Care and Occupational Medicine is pleased to now offer physical therapy evaluation and treatments through Mercy Motion. The service is available for patients by appointment at the West Asheville location, 1201 Patton Avenue, on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
